Star Of Octagonal Wins 2010 South Pacific Classic Ahead Of Neeson

April 19th, 2010

The Todd Howlett-trained Octagonal gelding Star Of Octagonal secured a coveted black type success at Randwick on Saturday when he beat home a quality field of gallopers in the $125,000 Group 3 Bacardi South Pacific Classic (1400m), giving Howlett his biggest career win to date.

Star Of Octagonal ($4.60), ridden by Glen Boss, finished strongly to defeat the odds-on favourite and last start winner of the Darby Munro Stakes, Neeson ($4.40) by half a length with All Legal ($21) the same margin away in third.

In a surprising twist, the top three placegetters were all Inglis graduates.

After the race was delayed when the John O’Shea-trained filly Lagerphone wouldn’t enter the barriers and subsequently had to be scratched when she become distressed, Star Of Octagonal stole the show when he got to the front inside the final 100m to steal a late victory.

Star Of Octagonal, purchased for just $23,000 as a yearling from the Scone Select Yearling Sale, has now won two of their five career starts for over $114,000 in prizemoney with bonuses elevating his total career earnings to over $165,000.

The $770,000 Scone Inglis Guineas (1600m), the richest country horse race in Australia, on May 14 is next on the cards for the promising three-year-old.

There were three great Group 1 feature races held at Randwick on Saturday following the running of the 2010 South Pacific Classic.

In the first of the day, the Gai Waterhouse-trained Once Were Wild claimed an upset victory in the $350,000 AJC Australian Oaks (2400m).

This was followed by Rangirangdoo’s close win in the $1.5 million Doncaster Mile (1600m).

Then, in the final Group 1 feature of the day, the talented Ortensia secured a win in the $300,000 The Galaxy (1100m).
